Typical HRIS tools include: Databases, Networks, Planning Software (e.g. merit planning software, training software), Employee Tracking Software (e.g. competencies, succession planning), Calculation Software (e.g. bonus, stock options), and Benefits Administration Software).

An integrated human resources software solution sometimes is composed of modules, some of them best of breed third party systems that integrate and operate as a whole with the rest of the package.

Some of these systems are included as an online based product while others are desktop based.
